 In
September 2004, bone void filler (OSferion) business was separated from Olympus Corporation
and established as a subsidiary named Olympus Biomaterial Corp. This reconfiguration represented the first step in our goal to realize regenerative medicine. In order to achieve this goal, we first need to formulate a steady business platform within our biomaterials field, which includes artificial bones. Our basic policy is to concentrate on biomaterials and promote related activities in close cooperation with the practical medical field. In order to respond immediately to the various requests of medical personnel, we have covered all the necessary business functions and organizations, namely those related to research and development, manufacturing and marketing, and continuously promote self-driven management.
In addition to our own comprehensive research and development projects, in August 2005 BONECERAM artificial bone business was transferred from SUMITOMO OSAKA CEMENT CO., LTD. Since then, we have expanded our artificial bone business and responded to the growing requests of our customers. On April 1, 2007, the collagen business of Terumo Corporation was transferred, which resulted in further expansion of our biomaterials business. In addition, Olympus Biomaterial Corp. became a new joint venture of Olympus Corporation and Terumo Corporation and, was renamed Olympus Terumo Biomaterials Corp. As mentioned, this has allowed us to achieve explosive growth in the biomaterials business field.
Our corporate philosophy can be expressed by the four Chinese characters, which can be phonetically read as "IKIIKI." "IKIIKI," which means "Full of Life," is derived from our efforts to realize "science and medicine that bring hope and ensure a quality way of life." Our hope is to establish regenerative medicine that stimulates the intrinsic healing capacity in the living body and enables regeneration of living tissue. This hope is clearly reflected in our corporate philosophy. This desire, however, is not limited to the establishment of regenerative medicine. We believe that any business or organization, even if it has yet to flourish, can develop extensively as long as it concentrates on the market and pours all of its energy into its activities, and this belief is also reflected in our corporate philosophy. Our vigorous organizational management enables us to promote further development of biomaterials and to realize regenerative medicine, and thereby contribute to building better tomorrow in the field of medical care.
